What is Undergraduate Research?
Undergraduate research is research completed by students at the undergraduate level that makes an original intellectual or other type of contribution to knowledge in a discipline or across multiple disciplines. This could be through dissertations, projects, course work, essays or by taking part in research that is completed independent of the curriculum, via internships or university research schemes.
ICUR Abstract Submissions
-
- Unfortunately we cannot accept abstract submissions to accommodate individual participants from non-participating universities. If there is a department or office dedicated to undergraduate research at your home university, we suggest you inquire with them about the possibility of getting involved with ICUR. More information for potential participating institutions can be found here.
-
- Yes. As long as you are applying within your last academic year at university or within 6 months of graduation prior to the conference you are eligible to apply.
-
- Yes! Many students conduct research during their final term of the academic year or over the summer. As long as your abstract indicates your intentions and possible outcomes, we can then update your abstract with your findings at a later time, before the conference in September.
-
- The Call for Papers opens in January for Warwick and usually in March for all other institutions.
-
- You will be notified via e-mail about the outcome of your submission. Warwick abstracts will be reviewed on a rolling basis and for all other institutions it is mid-June.
-
- Once you’ve been informed that your abstract has been accepted, you will be sent an e-mail with the registration link inviting you to register for the conference. You must register online within a week of receiving the registration email in order to present at the conference. Please check your e-mails throughout the summer months.
-
- Depending on the arrangement your home institution has with ICUR organisers, there may be an associated fee to cover conference expenses. This will be communicated on the registration page.
- The conference fees are kept very low to make it more affordable for students to attend. All money raised goes to cover the costs of putting on the conference and we do not normally offer financial support for this cost.
-
- ICUR is normally held every September. In 2018, the dates for the conference will be September 25-26, 2018
- The conference happens at each participating institution with sessions linked by video with other participating institutions. Your home university will confirm the building and room(s) directly with presenters. Participants do not need to travel outside of their home institution.
-
- It is possible to register for just one day of the conference. If you can only attend on one day please let the ICUR team know as soon as possible so that we can ensure that your presentation is scheduled on the correct day.
-
- Yes, you are encouraged to attend ICUR even if you are not presenting and can register as an audience member.
-
- You will be sent an e-mail a week or so before the conference confirming what day/time and session you are presenting in.
-
- Presentations should be 15 minutes long. After all the presenters in a session have made their formal presentations, a 30-minute Q &A follows in which everyone participates– presenters and audience members – both in the room and via video-conferencing.
- You can use PowerPoint or Prezi to support your talk but do think imaginatively and creatively about how to engage your audience. Don’t be afraid of getting them involved in different ways!
-
- A projector, screen and computer will be available in all rooms. If you need any more equipment for your presentation please contact the ICUR team.
-
- Each institution representative will require your presentation at least a week in advance of the conference but will remind you of this via e-mail closer to the date. You will not be able to make any changes to your presentation once you have submitted it. It will then be uploaded to the desktop in the room you will be presenting from (Monash Australia, Malaysia, and South Africa students are exempt from this).
-
- You will be notified via e-mail of where to post or deliver the hardcopy of your poster at least a week before the conference (Monash Australia students, please contact Kate Aldred (kate.aldred@monash.edu) for poster submission details).
- During the session, you will be physically standing by your poster to answer questions. In addition, you can also produce an electronic version of your poster via Prezi (http://prezi.com/) or PowerPoint that will be displayed at the participating institutions. This not a requirement but if you are interested in doing so, you can email your Prezi to the appropriate ICUR representative at your home university.
-
- Please visit ICUR’s Resources page to assist you.
-
- Your home institution will communicate any training being organised and delivered at your university via e-mail. We encourage you to sign up and practice, practice, practice to make the most of your ICUR experience.
-
- Yes, but any changes you make must be sent to the ICUR team by the end of August.

-
- We would advise smart casual. Try and be comfortable in what you wear – there’s no need to be too smart but remember you will be presenting in front of an audience.
-
- This means being supportive and kind to your fellow presenters. Many people are quite nervous presenting to an audience- never mind an international one! Be respectful by listening actively, not speaking while others are presenting and use language that is constructive not critical. Most of all be an engaged participant by asking questions during the Q & A! Finally, at ICUR we ask you to attend an entire scheduled session and not move between rooms. Sessions are themed around interdisciplinary topics and we ask that you make a contribution by staying to listen to all the presenters on the topic and participate thoughtfully in the Q&A.
