The International Conference of Undergraduate Research

ICUR 2024

ICUR 2024

The University of Warwick hosted the 11th International Conference of Undergraduate Research on 26-27th June 2024, where undergraduate students from participating institutions around the world presented their research through video-linked sessions.

ICUR 2024 saw the conference move to June, marking the successful return of the event after the University of Warwick’s hosting of the joint World Congress on Undergraduate Research (WorldCUR) and British Conference of Undergraduate Research (BCUR) in 2023. Across the year, ICUR welcomed new partner institutions, commenced a new programme of complementary sessions, and developed new training opportunities for presenters, resulting an acclaimed event with high participant satisfaction and strong international engagement.

ICUR showcases excellence in international undergraduate research. It provides student researchers with a unique opportunity to present their projects to interdisciplinary audiences in real-time, video-linked sessions from their home campus. Participants benefit from a supportive forum to engage in international, interdisciplinary research dialogue. Attendance at ICUR provides material for your CV, extensive feedback, valuable networking opportunities, and an introduction to research as a potential career.

Warwick Venice Centre at ICUR 2024

On Thursday 27th June, some of these connected sessions linked to Warwick Venice Centre, the University of Warwick’s new home in the heart of historic Venice. Students attending the Warwick International Intensive Study Programme (WIISP) in Venice participated in sessions hosted at Warwick Venice Centre, which were connected to students presenting from the University of Warwick. These sessions also featured local EUTOPIA partner institution Ca’Foscari University alongside two presentations from students at Columbia University, USA.

In a new development for 2024, the International Conference of Undergraduate Research (ICUR) included new links with Warwick Venice Centre as part of a series of events commemorating the 700th anniversary of the death of Marco Polo.

Keynote Speaker

Professor Michael Scott

Michael Scott is a Professor of Classics and Ancient History and the Pro-Vice-Chancellor International at the University of Warwick (UK). Having received his training at Cambridge University (UK), he now teaches and conducts research globally, focusing on ancient history and archaeology in the Mediterranean and utilising inter-disciplinary approaches and methods to investigate the ancient world through literary, epigraphic and material evidence. Prof Michael Scott is particularly passionate about making the ancient world, and academic research more generally, widely accessible. He is dedicated to bringing his work to interdisciplinary and international audiences through a broad range of outreach activities. For instance, he has authored books published widely in both academia and trade presses and translated into multiple languages, such as his latest book, X Marks the Spot: An Adventurous History of Archaeology; he makes regular media contributions, writing articles for national and international newspapers and appearing on the radio; he has presented television documentary series for the BBC, ITV, National Geographic and the History Channel; and he regularly works with and speaks at local schools. The global impact of his research and engagement have led him to receive multiple prestigious awards, recognising his teaching and contributions to the wider community, including a National Teaching Fellowship and Royal Historical Society Fellowship.

Student Directors

Iris Brandon

I'm Iris Brandon - a final year Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) student at the University of Warwick, and an ICUR Student Director since 2022. As a PPE student, I find ICUR's central value of interdisciplinary particularly exciting; the most rewarding aspect of ICUR so far has been facilitating students from different backgrounds with different academic interests to find links between topics and share thoughts, ideas, and perspectives. Connecting with student researchers at our conferences has shown me how valuable and important undergraduate research can be. This year, I hope to expand the opportunities and impact of our delegate's research here at ICUR.

Lily Jean

I am Lily, a fourth-year Politics and International Studies student at the University of Warwick. I am excited to be involved in ICUR this year because it provides a supportive, international, and interdisciplinary platform for students to not only develop their skills and confidence in research and presenting, but also to share exciting new ideas with the world. My research interests lie in global gender inequality and how women’s issues are analysed in the realms of conflict, security, development, and international governance. I have recently completed a funded research project on feminist foreign policy, which I am building on in my final year dissertation. During my time at university, I have also held the role of President of Warwick Think Tank – I am looking forward to continuing to bring students together around innovative research and ideas as Student Director of ICUR this year.
