The International Conference of Undergraduate Research

Undergraduate research on the global stage

What skills will I develop during the ICUR process?

INTERDISCIPLINARY COMMUNICATION

As an interdisciplinary conference, the primary skillset you will develop by participating in ICUR will be about communicating your ideas in both written and spoken form to people from a diverse range of cultural and academic backgrounds. It will enable you to view your research from a new perspective, focusing on its impacts and benefits not only in your field, but for wider society.

MENTORSHIP

You will also receive mentorship from our ICUR team aimed at developing your public speaking and communication skills. All presenters at ICUR are undergraduates and for most this will be the first time presenting at a conference, which creates a supportive and encouraging environment for everyone. For those interested in pursuing their research further, ICUR gives a first taste of the format, structure and application process for an academic conference; however everyone will benefit from the transferrable skills gained at ICUR that are valued by many employers.

CREATING GLOBAL CONNECTIONS

As everyone at the conference is also an undergraduate at the start of their research journey, you will find many opportunities to connect with other participants during the conference. We run workshops on intercultural communication and awareness, which you will have a chance to use and develop further when attending ICUR. The conference is a unique opportunity to make connections with international partners in other disciplines, which can add new value and insights to your research. It also allows you to develop a network of peers across the globe that are equally passionate about making interdisciplinary connections.

Many of the skills you develop will depend on how you engage with your ICUR conference journey. We aim to provide opportunities throughout the year for you to develop skills in any of the areas above and would love to see you at some of our workshops, events or complementary sessions. We also love hearing from our Alumni about how they have used their skills and connections in applying for jobs, developing their research or for international collaboration – you can get in touch with us through Instagram @icurstudents or drop us an email icur@warwick.ac.uk
